The IT (Information Technology) Alliance for Maryland

Our Platform

We endorse a voluntary pilot program of IT licensure in Maryland for the following industry professionals in order to use the following titles:

We will work with industry leaders in this domain such as IEEE and ACM to adopt their standard practices and code of ethics established in 1998.

We will work with additional stakeholders such as the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Institute of Architects to adopt professional standards that will comply with their standards for legal usage of these titles.

Powerful Facts:

Fact: Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Accountants, Architects and Realtors all require a license to practice their services in the State of Maryland*

* IT professionals build and maintain the systems that these individuals use every day.

Fact: Electricians, Plumbers, Barbers, Cosmetologists, Lawn Engineers, Interior Designers, and Home Inspectors have licensing in the State of Maryland**

** IT professionals build systems that transfer billions of dollars every day and have access to millions of records of personal information without similar requirements.

Fact: In 2004, the Standish Group found that only 34% of IT projects were successful, costing the government, business, consumers, and taxpayers billions of dollars.***

*** This success rate would be unacceptable in any other industry.

Fact:  In IT, the terms "Architect" and "Engineer" have been been diluted to meaningless titles.

**** These terms should be licensed and overseen by a certified board on a state-by-state basis.  Individuals claiming to be architects and engineers, should bear some professional accountability and responsibility that comes with the title.

Current Challenges:

  • Average IT industry’s Project Success Rates =  34%*
  • Amount wasted by businesses on unsuccessful software projects annually = $55 Billion*
  • Downward pressures on IT salaries
  • Poor quality product.

Our Goal:

  • Establish the nation’s first professional IT architecture and engineering board in Maryland. "Maryland Board of IT Architecture and Engineering".
  • Promote better standards and education for IT in Maryland
  • Elevate Maryland as the prominent IT market both nationally and internationally

IMPORTANT:  We are not promoting the licensure of every IT person.  Only critical design influencers such as Architects and Engineers

Benefits:

An end result of our pledge:

  • Leadership by Example: Be the first in the nation to establish an IT Board.

  • Recognition - with an IT Board just like Realtors, Doctors etc.

  • Better for business - Less costly IT failures creates a more healthy and stable business environment.

  • Better for healthcare - Lowered IT costs and improved systems result in better client care and service.

  • Better for the state budget - Less waste from failed projects, better systems create a more efficient government.

  • Better for the taxpayer - Less tax dollars chasing unsuccessful government IT efforts

  • Better for Maryland IT Professionals

  • Better for Maryland
